Various Approaches in Linguistics: SFL and Language Documentation

A rare chance came to the students of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, especially the English Department students who would or have taken linguistics concentration to finish their graduating paper. This training was organized by some proficient lecturers of English Department who have lots of experiences in practical and theoretical fields. The first speaker of this event was Sarwo Ferdi Wibowo, S.Pd, a researcher in Bengkulu Research Office and also a practical researcher. Recently, he had done a research in Enggano Island, Bengkulu, a provincial and cultural area where the number of the native speakers was declining. His experiences in giving a lecture about the phenomena of language in society directly are important to help the linguistics students in understanding the wider aspects of language.
The second speaker of this event was Mr. Khristianto M. Hum, a lecturer from English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto and also an expert in linguistics field whose specialty was SFL theory (Systemic Functional Linguistics). He focused on explaining about the breakthrough of linguistics. The understanding about SFL was able to give an opportunity to those who would take linguistics, so that the students could be able to discuss linguistics wider in many different aspects
So far, the discussion of language is often limited to the text or narrative analysis. However, we can actually analyze language practically or by directly meeting the existing original speakers if only we could be more open-minded and see it from wider perspective. This notion could bring various positive impacts on the results of practical language researches, such as the ability to get a wider and accurate result regarding the phenomena of language in particular society and the ability to gain a fantastic experience in social project. Moreover, we can help to develop them in many aspects and we can also become the facilitator for the things they could not reach, so that they can receive the same result as we do.
The language documentation explained by Mr. Sarwo could open our perception and help us conserve the traditional languages that are in the brink of extinction because of the cultural chance. The thing that we could do to support is by participating to preserve the traditional languages in Indonesian by doing language documentation as arranged by Surwo.
What Khristanto explained about in SFL study is very beneficial to all students of English Department of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, and this topic could bring a positive impact in language field. For students in Linguistics track, this would be helpful for them to gain more understanding about SFL and becomes one of references in choosing the topic of their graduating paper. In this SFL Study, it does not rule out the possibility that students who have chosen Linguistics concentration could discuss about it in CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) course.
This language training was expected to provide new and broad insight for students of English Department. There is a lot that can be done to help doing the thesis work and the provision of social action in the process of preserving languages. Some students responded with various questions that were quite critical, indicating their interest to pursue research in these particular topics.
