Improving English Literature Students' English Proficiency Through an Online TOEFL Upgrading Program in 2026
A series of TOEFL Score Upgrading activities for English Literature students.
Yogyakarta – The English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga once again held a TOEFL score improvement program, or TOEFL Score Upgrading. This activity was attended by 72 students from the class of 2023, who are currently in their 6th semester. The program was conducted online via the Zoom Meeting platform from April 25 to May 31, 2026.
This program was designed to equip students with effective strategies for taking the TOEFL test. Three main materials were taught in this program: Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading. Each material was taught by a different instructor according to their area of expertise.
The program was carried out through three main stages. The first stage was a pre-test, which was held on April 25, 2026, to measure the participants' initial ability. Next, regular learning sessions were conducted every Saturday and Sunday from April 26 to May 30, 2026. The program then concluded with a post-test on May 31, 2026, as a benchmark for measuring the participants' progress after attending the series of TOEFL Upgrading 2026 sessions.
This program was taught by three instructors who are graduates of the English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Niken Octavia Adica, S.S. taught the Listening material, Disa Wandayu Nestikaprabandari, S.S. taught the Structure and Written Expression material, and Stevi Wulandari, S.S. taught the Reading material to the participants. These three instructors were selected based on their competence and experience in the field of English language teaching.
This program was implemented due to the importance of achieving a TOEFL score for English Literature students, both during their studies and after graduation. The English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga sets a minimum TOEFL score of 450 as an administrative requirement for submitting a Thesis Advisor Request (DPS) as well as a requirement for taking the Thesis Proposal Seminar course. A minimum score of 500 is set as a requirement for registering for the monaqosyah (thesis examination). Therefore, through the TOEFL Upgrading 2026 program, it is expected to help improve the English competency of the English Literature class of 2023.
Beyond academic administrative purposes, achieving a good TOEFL score is also considered crucial for alumni in various opportunities, such as applying for jobs both domestically and abroad, as well as applying for further study scholarships. Therefore, the English Literature Study Program regularly facilitates its students with TOEFL preparation programs to ensure competent and competitive graduates.
Until now, the program is still ongoing. The pre-test has been conducted, and several material sessions have taken place. There are still several more sessions before the program concludes with the post-test at the end of May 2026. Through this program, the English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga hopes that all participants will achieve the targeted TOEFL scores as preparation for completing their studies or entering the workforce.
