Upgrading Student Competencies through Zotero Training

The English Literature program once again organized a Zotero training for students of the 2020 and 2021 cohorts. The activity took place over four consecutive days via the Zoom Meeting application, from October 26th to October 29th, 2022. Each day, the training lasted for approximately four hours and featured Dr. Eric Kuntho Aribowo, M.A. and Khristianto, S.S., M. Hum as the speakers.

The training was officially opened by the Head of the English Literature program, Ulyati Retno Sari, M. Hum, on the first day. The first speaker, Khristianto, M. Hum, presented on the topic of reference search and search strategies. The second speaker, Dr. Eric Kuntho, discussed material search based on software. In each session, the speakers engaged in discussions and question-and-answer sessions with the participants.

The second day of the training started at the same time as before, at 9:00 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Khristianto, M. Hum, provided examples of Zotero installation and its usage. He invited several participants to share their screens and practice installing Zotero, as well as showcasing their collections. Following that, Dr. Eric Kuntho covered the topic of reference management, specifically using Zotero. The speakers not only presented the material but also provided practical examples and detailed applications.

Moving on to the third day, Dr. Eric Kuntho began the first session by discussing how to read articles quickly and efficiently. He introduced the classification of scientific journal types and then offered practical methods for reading them. In the second session, Khristianto, M. Hum, explained the steps for composing scientific articles.

On the final day, Dr. Eric Kuntho started his first session with an explanation of the peer review process in journal publishing. He also provided information about journal rankings in Indonesia and introduced the software "Praat," along with a tutorial on installing "Publish or Perish." Participants were encouraged to try the software, and some were invited to share their screens and consult directly with the speaker. The second session was conducted by Khristianto, M. Hum, who presented examples of his research using "Publish or Perish." The last session consisted of a question-and-answer and discussion session between the participants and the speakers, followed by closing remarks from the Program Secretary, Febriyanti Dwiratna Lestari, M. A.

The four-day training proceeded smoothly and was attended by hundreds of participants each day. The training was made livelier by the speakers who provided souvenirs to the most active participants each day. (HFS/URS)
