An English Literature Student Participates in International Debate Competition in Istanbul, Turkey

On Monday, June 13, 2022, one of the students from English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga was officially sent off to participate in an international debate competition. The competition took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 17 to 23, 2022, and was known as the 6th International Universities Arabic Debating Championship (IUADC), organized by Qatar Debate. The participating student from the English Literature Program was Ala', currently in the sixth semester of her studies. Ala' and their team were directly guided by Prof. Dr. H. Ibnu Burdah, S.Ag., M.A., who is a professor in Arabic Language and Literature Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
As one of the prospective participants in the international debate competition, Ala' already has a lot of experiences in debating, including participating in the International Electronic Debate Championship in Arabic 2020, the International Mahrajan Al-Azhar Al-Arabi, and other debate competitions. Additionally, Ala' has often achieved success in debate competitions, such as being named the best speaker at the Hawari Arabic Debating Championship and winning first place in the Musabaqah Munazarah 'Abra Internet USIM in Malaysia. Despite being a student of English Literature, Ala' has proven that students in the English Literature Study Program can also master other foreign languages.
Ala' and the team participate in the international debate competition as representatives of Indonesia, and all team members come from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, each with different majors. The debate team was officially sent off with prayers and support from Ulyati Retno Sari, M.Hum. (Head of English Literature Study Program), Dr. Ening Herniti, M.Hum. (Head of Arabic Language and Literature Study Program), Dr. Moh. Wakhid Hidayat, M.A. (Secretary of Arabic Language and Literature Study Program), Yasin Baidi, S.Ag, M.Ag. (Head of Islamic Family Law Study Program), Dr. Moh. Kanif Anwari, M.Ag. (Lecturer), and Umi Nurun Ni'mah, S.S., M.Hum. (Lecturer).
Before officially departing for the international debate competition, Ala' and the team consistently held regular practice sessions. Despite their academic obligations, Ala' and the team remained enthusiastic in pursuing their goal of becoming a successful debate team. They were not only sent off with support but also with prayers, hoping that everything would go well and smoothly. (FY/URS)
