Teater Pandora at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Returns to Screen a Film at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta

Teater Pandora is a platform for project-based learning activities for students in the English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, guided by Dr. Danial Hidayatullah, SS., M.Hum. In their Dramatic Performance course, each cohort can choose to either stage a play or screen a film. This year, the English Literature students from the 2021 cohort decided to screen a film titled "Hikayat Para Keparat," involving 79 students in its production. "Hikayat Para Keparat" is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's work titled "The Threepenny Opera" and was screened on September 9, 2023, at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta.

The film "Hikayat Para Keparat," produced by the 2021 English Literature students, falls under the genres of drama and dark comedy, with a duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes. Interestingly, the film explores life issues that can be found in our surroundings. It tells the story of Chandra, who marries Putri, the only daughter of Mr. Somad. Putri's parents, who disapprove of the marriage, try to find ways to separate Chandra and Putri. Devious schemes are hatched by Mr. Somad and his wife to force Chandra and Putri to part ways. They succeed in getting Chandra imprisoned, but Chandra's name wouldn't be Chandra if he couldn't escape from jail. The film narrates the ultimate fate of Chandra and Putri.

The film production process began in December 2022 with conceptual planning, fundraising, and scriptwriting activities. Then, on June 22, 2023, the filming process for "Hikayat Para Keparat" began, taking approximately two weeks. This was followed by the editing process and the planning of the film screening event.
