Training on Article Writing for Students of the English Literature Study Program, Classes of 2021 and 2022

In response to the latest regulations that require students in the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences to submit journal article manuscripts as a prerequisite for registering their final thesis or munaqosyah defense, the English Literature Study Program organized a training session on article writing for English Literature students from the classes of 2021 and 2022. The aim of this activity is to assist students in producing scholarly works suitable for publication. The event spanned three days and was conducted via Zoom Meeting, with live broadcasting on YouTube Live, from September 25 to 27, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM WIB. Dr. Eric Kunto Aribowo from Universitas Widya Dharma, Klaten, served as the guest speaker for this event, with Nirmala Chindy acting as the MC and moderator.

On the first day, the event commenced with opening remarks from the committee chair, Bambang Hariyanto, Ph.D, followed by a welcome address from the head of the English Literature Study Program, Ulyati Retno Sari, M.Hum, who also officially inaugurated the training program.

On the first day of training, the guest speaker presented materials covering an introduction to scholarly articles and research ethics and publication. Participants learned about the research cycle from its inception to its conclusion. During the second day of training, the speaker discussed the integration of SciSpace and Zotero in reference management. Searching for references in the process of writing scholarly articles, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), is facilitated using tools like SciSpace. The speaker also explained how to import search results from SciSpace into Zotero.

On the third day of training, participants were introduced to ChatGPT. They received the latest guidance on using ChatGPT for scholarly writing. The guest speaker emphasized that students are expected to use this tool wisely. A similar message was conveyed by the Head of the English Literature Study Program, Ulyati Retno Sari, M.Hum, who reminded the students to exercise caution in using ChatGPT and to utilize it solely as an aid in their learning process.

The article writing training proceeded smoothly with a high level of enthusiasm from the participants. Several students actively engaged in asking questions and engaging in interactive discussions with the guest speaker. This training is expected to accelerate the completion of research articles by English Literature students, especially those who are preparing draft thesis proposals and scholarly works for journal publication.
