Dramatic Performance Workshop With Butet Kartaredjasa

Butet Kartaredjasa, as the speaker, is delivering the material.
On Saturday, November 18, 2023, the English Literature study program invited Butet Kartaredjasa as a speaker for the Dramatic Performance Workshop held in a hybrid format at the Theatrical Room of the Language Center at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and through Zoom Meeting. The workshop was attended by students from classes of 2022 and 2023.
Dramatic Performance is the final part of the drama course series, embodying the fundamentals of drama previously covered in two preceding courses: Dramatic Criticism and Dramaturgy. Each year, students taking the Dramatic Performance course are required to produce a drama performance showcased to the public. In an effort to enhance students' competence, particularly in preparation for this year's performance, the English Literature study program brought in Butet Kartaredjasa, a prominent figure in the Indonesian arts scene.
The event commenced at 07:30 AM with participant registration by the organizers, followed by the opening ceremony hosted by MC Luthfina Cahyani Sinta and Co-Host Muhammad Devin El-choir Pratama. The program began with the singing of the Indonesian national anthem and the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Hymn. Subsequent events included speeches by Vice Dean 3, Dr. Sujadi, MA, and the Head of the English Literature study program, Ulyati Retno Sari, M.Hum.
The session with Butet Kartaredjasa as the speaker began at 09:00 AM, moderated by Dr. Danial Hidayatullah, who also teaches the Dramatic Performance course. At the start of the session, the moderator introduced Teater Pandora, the theater of the English Literature study program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The speaker then provided insights into the analysis, adaptation, and production of dramatic performances.
Butet commenced his presentation by sharing his experience in the theater world, starting in 1977. In his opinion, being an actor is not just about playing a role but also about learning the art of life. Learning theater for acting is only 20%. Theater is an attempt to convincingly present knowledge that seems non-existent as if it exists. Furthermore, the speaker explained how theater requires extra and extreme preparation. Every actor must be able to imagine because imagination is the essence of theater.
Regarding the adaptation of drama scripts, adapting from English to Indonesian involves not only changing the language but also adjusting to the Indonesian context. Additionally, transparent and fair artistic management is necessary.
During the Q&A session, many participants asked questions and sought advice from the speaker. The event proceeded smoothly. With the new knowledge shared by the speaker, it is hoped that participants can apply them, especially in the preparation for the 2023 drama performance project, ensuring that the play they present achieves optimal results.
