English Department of FADIB Participates in a Short Course on Islamic History and Civilization with UIN Sunan Kalijaga and UKM Malaysia

As part of the Student Mobility initiative, the English Department of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences participated in a Short Course on Islamic History and Civilization in collaboration with UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The discussion was held in the Theatrical Room, first floor of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. This event aimed to strengthen international relations and broaden students’ understanding of Islamic history and civilization in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The representatives from the English Department were the Head of the Department, Dr. Ulyati Retno Sari, S.S., M.Hum.; the Secretary of the Department, Dr. Dwi Margo Yuwono, M.Hum., and the internship student representatives from English Department, Putra Ramadhan and Siti Humairo, as well as the management representatives and members of the English Department Student Association (HMPSSI) 2025. The event began at 9:00 AM with singing of Indonesia's national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and Malaysia's national anthem, Negaraku. Then, this was followed by an opening speech by the Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Nurdin, S.Ag., S.S., M.A., who emphasized that this meeting served as a significant step towards fostering future academic collaborations between the two universities, both offline and online.

The session continued with presentations by 14 students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), moderated by a student from the Islamic Civilization History Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The discussion focused on the role and contributions of K.H. Ahmad Dahlan and Muhammadiyah in the history of Islamic civilization. The topics presented provided valuable insights then opening new perspectives on the further development of Islamic civilization.

The engaging discussions sparked enthusiasm among UIN Sunan Kalijaga students. This enthusiasm was evident through the questions and responses raised, such as how K.H. Ahmad Dahlan’s thoughts were accepted in conservative societies, the influence of Muhammadiyah teachings in Malaysia, and the integration of religious and scientific knowledge. The event concluded with a summary delivered by the MC and a group photo session. (Humairo)
