The 5th AICONICS: Exploring Practices of Coexistence in Islamic Culture
The 5th AICONICS (Adab-International Conference on Information and Cultural Science), carrying the theme “Practices of Coexisten
Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, Universitas Islam Negeri/UIN (State Islamic University) Sunan Kalijaga successfully held its annual event, The 5th AICONICS (Adab-International Conference on Information and Cultural Science). On this occasion, AICONICS introduced a new format through collaboration with an international symposium under the theme “Practices of Coexistence in Islamic Culture,” creating an inspiring combination of culture and thought in line with the current context.
From May 28 to 29, 2024, the event not only showcased arts and cultural expressions, but also provided a space for in-depth discussions on the ideas of diversity and tolerance in the Islamic tradition. This collaboration broadened intellectual perspectives by inviting experts and academics from various countries to share their views on how the values of coexistence in Islamic culture can be applied in modern daily life.
The Chair of the 5th AICONICS and 3rd International Symposium Committee, Dr. Witriani from the English Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, revealed that more than 300 papers were presented in a hybrid format through plenary and parallel sessions. The event took place at the Convention Hall and the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, with speakers from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Australia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
The event was attended by more than 20 distinguished speakers from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Australia, and Indonesia. Among them were Prof. Dr. Zekeriyya Akman (Kırıkkale University, Turkey), Assoc. Prof. Agil Shirinov (Rector of Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, Azerbaijan), Prof. Dr. Sönmez Kutlu (Ankara University, Turkey), Prof. Dr. Wail as-Sayyid (‘Ainu Syam University, Egypt), Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilara Begum (East West University, Bangladesh), Prof. Dr. Julian Millie (Monash University, Australia), Dr. Gina Karlin (RELO, U.S. Embassy), Colm Peter Downes (British Council), Prof. Utami Widiati (President of TEFLIN, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Novi Anoegrajekti, M.Hum. (President of HISKI, Indonesia), Dr. Adi Sutrisno (President of ESAI, Indonesia), and Dr. Hj. Meinarni Susilowati, M.Ed. (President of LITA ADIA, Indonesia). These speakers, together with other academics and experts from Indonesia and abroad, enriched the discussions by sharing their insights on coexistence, diversity, and tolerance in Islamic culture.
The conclusion of the 5th AICONICS 2024, in collaboration with the International Symposium, not only proved the ability of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences to organize international events. It also presented a global and in-depth perspective on the existence of Islamic culture. Through this event, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences at UIN Sunan Kalijaga further strengthened its position as a center for the development of inclusive knowledge and culture that promotes peace and diversity.
