Visit of the Yogyakarta Tour Guide Team Provides Practical Insights for French for Tourism Students

Yogyakarta, December 15, 2025 – The English Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences (FADIB), UIN Sunan Kalijaga, welcomed a special visit from a team of Yogyakarta tour guides as part of the French for Specific Purposes (French for Tourism) course. The activity was attended by fifth-semester students enrolled in the course, aiming to provide them with first-hand insight into the profession and practical work of tour guiding.

The session was led by Kusmayanti Pujianingsih, S.Pd., an experienced tour guide who also serves as an assessor and resource person in the field of tour guiding. She is affiliated with the Training Bureau of the Regional Board of the Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI) of Yogyakarta Special Region. In her presentation, she explained various technical and procedural aspects of tourist pick-up and drop-off services, in accordance with the training modules issued by HPI.

Several key points shared with the students included:

  • Tourist pick-up procedures, such as document checking, tourist identification, baggage handling, and the use of passenger lists.
  • Welcoming and communication techniques that create a positive first impression, including delivering information about transfer procedures, travel itineraries, accommodation facilities, and local culture.
  • Introduction to supporting tools and facilities, such as signboards, communication devices, money changers, and ATMs.
  • Departure and drop-off procedures, including hotel check-out, baggage handling, and processes at airports or other departure points.

In addition, students received explanations about tour guide certification and membership through HPI, the importance of professional ethics, and essential competencies such as accuracy, responsibility, and the ability to coordinate with related stakeholders.

This activity not only enriched students’ academic knowledge but also provided practical preparation for those interested in pursuing careers in tourism, particularly with French language skills as an added professional advantage.

“We greatly appreciate the visit and knowledge sharing from the HPI DIY team. The material delivered is highly relevant to the objectives of the French for Specific Purposes course, which aims to prepare students to professionally serve French-speaking tourists,” said the course lecturer.

It is hoped that collaboration between academics and practitioners like this will continue to be developed in order to produce competent graduates who are ready to compete in the professional world, especially in the increasingly globalized tourism sector. (PR/DMY/URS/HFS)
