Linguapreneurship: Empowering English Literature Students for Diverse Career Paths

Linguapreneurship, derived from the combination of the words "language" and "entrepreneurship," is one of the elective courses offered in the English Literature Study Program at Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences (FADIB), UIN Sunan Kalijaga (SuKa), Yogyakarta. Students take this course in their sixth semester as one of their elective subjects. The purpose of linguapreneurship is to prepare English literature students at UIN SuKa for the workforce, not only within their field of study but also in various other career options.

The idea for this course was initially conceived by the faculty members of the English Literature Study Program at UIN SuKa in 2022. It is now (in even semester, 2022/2023) taught by Laiyinatus Shifa Z.N. S.Hum., M.Pd., one of the lecturers in the study program, who has not only been involved in the field of education but has also worked as a content creator. Miss Nana, as she is often called, hopes to share her knowledge of linguapreneurship with her students. She divides the work into different divisions, allowing students to choose according to their interests and talents. These divisions include educator, translator, content creator, tour guide, editor, news anchor, and counselor. Students who have chosen a specific division will be taught various aspects related to their chosen field, including understanding the work rhythm and undertaking projects throughout the semester based on their division.

The course is attended by 46 students, who not only learn the theory but also apply what they have learned in real work settings. For example, the content creator division is required to create social media accounts for linguapreneurship, such as Instagram @linguapreneurshipuinsk and TikTok at tiktok.com/@linguapreneurship.uinsk. They are responsible for managing these accounts and filling them with content from other divisions. The editor and news anchor divisions also have podcasts that they manage. (lszn/urs/hfs)
