HMPSSI - Increasing Public Speaking: Embracing Change, Inspiring Growth
On Monday, June 5, 2023, at 09:00 AM (Western Indonesia Time), the Student Association of English Literature Study Program (HMPSSI) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga for the 2023 period organized a Public Speaking Seminar with the theme "Increasing Public Speaking: Embracing Change, Inspiring Growth." The event was divided into two sessions, with different speakers for each session. Dewi Gunarto, commonly known as Kak Dewi, was the first speaker at the event. Kak Dewi is a radio announcer, MC, and public speaker. Currently, she works as a radio announcer at Star FM Jogja. Additionally, she is often invited to speak at campus events, such as being a speaker at an event organized by the English Literature Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga in 2021 with the theme "Be Productive, Creative, and Adaptive in the Era of Society 5.0." The next session's material was delivered by Laiyinatus Shifa Zuhrotun N, also known as Miss Nana. She is an English tutor, content creator, and education consultant at Neutron Priority, IONs International Education from 2018 to 2022. She is also an English tutor at Indonesia College from 2022 until now. Currently, she is an English teacher at the Language Center, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta. In addition to her academic pursuits, Miss Nana is actively involved as the owner and manager of Nana and Team Translation.
The seminar was warmly welcomed by many students, especially the 2022 batch of the English Literature Study Program. The event was also attended by representatives from each Student Council (DEMA), Student Senate (SEMA), and other Student Associations from different programs within the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
During the first session, Kak Dewi Gunarto provided a lot of material on how to become a good speaker. She also emphasized the importance of knowing one's strengths and weaknesses to speak in public more effectively. Participants in the seminar were given insight into the immense power of public speaking and how it can truly change lives. She also touched on the notion that change may be difficult to accept, but with public speaking, it is no longer a challenge. She stated that strengthening public speaking skills can help individuals progress and grow.
In the second session, Miss Nana delivered fresh material, providing many new insights. Despite being held in the afternoon, participants showed their enthusiasm by asking numerous questions and interacting with the speaker. In this session, Miss Nana asked and made participants aware of what they possess, their strengths and weaknesses, in order to help them become better speakers. "Life is not only about finding yourself, but also about creating yourself." This motivational quote served as the closing remark to conclude the public speaking seminar. (hmpssi/urs/hfs/as)
