Yogyakarta State University (UNY) once again held an open doctoral promotion examination in the Graduate Program on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. This examination was conducted by a linguistics lecturer in the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, namely Dwi Margo Yuwono, familiarly known day-to-day as Pak Margo.
Born in Probolinggo on April 19, 1977, Pak Margo is renowned for teaching courses such as Translation Theories, BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers), Translation Practice English-Indonesia, and Reading. His dedication to the realm of education and English literature extends beyond the university and can be seen through his various academic writings on https://scholar.google.co.id/citations?user=HS5k-7kAAAAJ.
His dissertation, titled "Determining Factors behind the Successful Implementation of the Indonesian Language Policy for Foreign Speakers in Higher Education Institutions in DIY," reflects his research throughout his doctoral studies in the Department of Research and Educational Evaluation (PEP) at UNY. In his dissertation, Pak Margo evaluated the implementation of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Policy No. 27 of 2017 on competency standards for the BIPA program carried out by higher education institutions in DIY. His research revealed several factors influencing the success of the BIPA program, where the most dominant instructional factor was the role of the teacher. Additionally, the motivation of foreign students studying the Indonesian language was the most influential non-instructional factor.
The Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Wildan, M.A., also attended this open doctoral promotion examination, alongside Pak Margo's colleagues from the English Literature Study Program. Their presence attests to the collaboration between higher education institutions in enhancing the quality of education in Yogyakarta.
Pak Margo, known for his warmth and friendliness towards his students, also received full support from his family. Alexandra Wrestirhin Nadiar Fahrani, his wife, along with their two children, Lakeisha Alief Rajni Yuwono and Cyra Lumiera Raniya Yuwono, extended their encouragement and prayers for the success of this examination.
The success of this open examination is not only a personal achievement for Pak Margo but also a significant contribution to education in Indonesia, especially regarding the implementation of the BIPA policy in higher education. (urs/hfs)
