Preventing Plagiarism through Zotero Apps Training

In order to develop students' knowledge in understanding plagiarism, Zotero Apps training featuring Dr. Leonard CH Efapras was held on Tuesday, October 9th, 2018. Zotero is anopen-source research databasesupport that can connect with Google Chrome and other search engines. By using Zotero, everyone can cite fast and easily. The event was held in the Munaqosyah room of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University and attended by 50 participants.

The event started at 08.00 am and was joined by the students of English Department. At 9 am, the program was opened by the Head of the English Department of Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, Dr. Ubaidillah S.S., M.Hum. He explained briefly about the importance of citations in writing a thesis and the risks of plagiarism. Ubaidillah then introduced Dr. Leonard CH Efapras as the speaker who would explain about the use of the Zotero application. Dr. Leonard CH Efapras is a lecturer from Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW) who studied Theology and Popular Culture. Dr. Leonard gained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the Immanuel Christian University and a Master's degree from Duta Wacana Christian University. He obtained the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degree from Gajah Mada University in 2012.

In this training, Dr. Leonard talked about the advantages and guides to use Zotero. Firstly, Leonard made sure all participants have installed Zotero and created a Zotero account. Making a Zotero account was intended to keep the data safe in case an error on the computer occurs. Furthermore, Leonard gave an example of how to activate the Zotero feature into Microsoft Word and also to install Zotero in Google Chrome. After that, Leonard showed how to save references both from e-books and offline books manually in Zotero. Finally, Leonard explained how to apply Zotero into user writings, such as inputting the author's name, book title, year of publication, place of publication, and publisher. Then, Leonard also conveyed how to unlink quotes from Zotero.

In addition, to cite references from books, Zotero can also be used for recording references from YouTube, journals, and other forms of writing found on the Internet. The Zotero application can also be used to create and record references easier and simpler. For question and answer sessions, no special time was given to ask questions. A direct question session was held at the time of delivery of material provided by Leonard. Some students enthusiastically asked questions about various things about Zotero. The workshop was ended with a group photo.
