Teaching Practitioners: UIN Sunan Kalijaga's English Literature Program Presents Professional Tour Guide

“Teaching Practitioners” is a form of implementation of the MBKM curriculum in 2022 in increasing collaboration between the industrial world and universities and increasing the relevance of lectures to field needs. Therefore, the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga held a “Teaching Practitioner” activity by inviting Mr. Anwar, S.Pd. as a practitioner in the field of tourism, namely a nationally licensed guide with competence in French and English who works for the international tourism agency company “Terres D'Aventure”. The guest lecture on November 25, 2024 took place in the munaqosyah room of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The enthusiasm of students to take part in this “Teaching Practitioner” program is quite large because they get this new knowledge and experience directly from a professional tour guide accompanied by a French for Specific Purpose lecturer, Dr. Dwi Margo Yuwono, M.Hum. This teaching practitioner lecture activity is important to be carried out in order to add insight and interest to students to strengthen student studies and experience in the use of French in the world of work in accordance with the learning outcomes of the French for Specific Purpose course.

In his presentation, Mr. Anwar, S.Pd. conveyed his experience in his work in guiding French-speaking foreign tourists (Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, even African continent countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and so on). The most important asset when working in tourism is communication, so foreign language skills are the most important competency when students want to work in this field. Don't be afraid of being wrong at work, all things that have just been learned, must be practiced so that they can become provisions and experience when dealing with tourists. Another capital that must be considered for students is knowledge of geography and never give dishonest statements to clients and don't be afraid to say don't know if you don't know when describing locations and conditions to tourists. Important tips for when aspiring to become a guide do not hesitate to learn about tourist areas and their specialties from local cultural experts, “he said. In addition, he also stated that being a guide who meets with foreigners does not affect our faith as Muslims, for example when we meet with foreign tourists inviting cipika cipiki then we as Muslim guides can refuse by giving reasons that it is not in accordance with our rules as Muslims.

All participants were very enthusiastic about participating in this activity. This was evidenced by the number of participants who asked about their work experience to Mr. Anwar. Questions about how tips to become a good tour guide and also how we can develop the skills needed in the field of tourism were widely expressed by students who attended this lecture. At the end of the event all participants took a photo with Mr. Anwar S.Pd. accompanied by French for Specific Purpose lecturer, Dr. Dwi Margo Yuwono M.Hum. (DMY/URS/HFS)
