The English Literature Program at UIN SUKA Visits Thammasat University, Thailand

On June 11, 2024, the English Literature Program had the opportunity to attend an invitation from the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, Thailand, to give a seminar presentation themed "LANGUAGE, REPRESENTATION, AND CONTEMPORARY MEDIA: PERSPECTIVES FROM INDONESIA." One student and three lecturers from the English Literature program represented the seminar.

The seminar was opened by Associate Prof. Maytawee Holasut as the moderator, followed by a welcome speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Associate Prof. Passapong Sripicharn. The first session of the seminar began with a paper presentation by English Literature student Haidar Nushir Bi’aunillah on the comparison of the representation of social anxiety in Hollywood and Bollywood films, titled "Social Anxiety through the Eyes of Autism Sibling: Comparing My Name Is Khan (2010) and Rain Man (1988)." Following this, the second presentation, titled "Promoting Religious Moderation through Satire in Social Media," was delivered by English Literature lecturer Dr. Dwi Margo Yuwono, M.Hum. This presentation focused on the satire present in social media that touches on religion, emphasizing how these satires spread the values of religious moderation among Generation Z.

After the second presentation, there was a Q&A session with the two presenters, followed by a short break. The third presentation, titled "Translation Equivalence of Culture Specifics: Is It Possible?" was delivered by English Literature lecturer Fuad Arif Fudiyartanto, S.Pd., M.Hum., M.Ed., Ph.D. This presentation discussed one of the challenges in translation, namely cultural differences. The final presentation was delivered by English Literature lecturer Dr. Danial Hidayatullah, SS., M.Hum. His presentation, discussing an article titled "From Gendered Spaces to Confinement: The Shifting of Symbolic Function of Islands in Indonesian Horror Films," explained the shifting symbolic function of islands in Indonesian horror films.

Before the Q&A session, Dr. Danial also presented the best practices activities carried out by the English Literature Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, namely the annual dramatic performance by English Literature students. To provide a description of this activity, he gave the floor to an English Literature alumnus currently pursuing a Master's degree in Thailand, Fachri Hamzah Pangestu. Fachri described the excitement of participating in the dramatic performance program, including sharing tips on handling taboo scenes at an Islamic university, such as using a rose as a prop for hand-holding scenes between men and women.

The seminar was then closed by the moderator and the Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. This event was conducted as a follow-up to the collaboration between the English Literature program and the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, Thailand.
