Student Mobility: Real Steps to the Implementation of Collaboration between UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto

On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 08:00 WIB, at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication (FIBK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a commitment in enhancing collaboration between the two parties. The agreement was signed by Dr.Ulyati Retno Sari M.Hum as the Head of English Literature Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Dr. Widya Nirmalawati, S.S., M.A. as the Dean of FIBK Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The event was also attended by the Deputy Dean of FIBK, Mrs Fitri Rakhmawati, S.S., M.Pd., the Head of English Literature Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, Mrs Sulasih Nurhayati S.S., M.Hum. and the lecturers of English Literature of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto University who each gave a word of welcome and hope for the ongoing collaboration between the two parties. The series of events ended with a group photo session and then followed up with study program collaboration activities.

As the first step in implementing the collaboration, UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s English Literature Program carried out a Student Mobility Program which sent five students from the batches of 2021 to 2024. This program took place from 9 to 12 December 2024. The students were asked to present the dissemination of their research as an attempt to enrich their learning experience outside the college. At 1 pm on the same day, four of the five students, namely Saffanastussa’idiyah and Afrizal Pirmansah presented their research on the difficulties of Turkish students in pronouncing some English phonemes titled Turkish College Students in Pronouncing English Phoneme /w/ and /ð/. Azkia Salsabila and Sofi Mayla Firdaus presented their research on students difficulties in using prefix in- in English when translating text from Indonesian negation titled The Difficulties of English Derivative Negation Affixes “in-, un-, dis" Usage in Translation from Indonesian to English among Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences of Sunan Kalijaga Islamic State University Students.

Each presentation was followed by a Q&A session and feedback given by the lecturers. The program took place in the same session as the proposal seminar course which was attended by English Literature lecturers, namely Mrs. Fitri Rakhmawati, S.S., M.Pd., Mr. Ambar Pujiyatno, SS., M.Hum, and Mr. Khristianto, S.S., M. Hum and students from Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto

The next day, one participant of the program, Hani Azfariza presented her research on the portrayal of Muslims in a minority environment in a film titled Potrayal of Muslim as A Minority in The Taqwacores (2010) on 11 December 2024 in the morning in the same time as one of the courses and ended with Q&A session and feedback given by the lecturer of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto who attended the class, Mr. Khristianto, S.S., M. Hum.On the last day, Friday, 12 December 2024, the program was closed with a campus tour of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto and a short visit to the English Literature Program of Jenderal Soedirman University (UNSOED).

The Student Mobility program was not only a manifestation of collaboration but was also expected to be an opportunity for students to support the development of their academic abilities and soft skills. Collaboration between UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto was expected to have a positive impact on students, lecturers, and both institutions in the continuity of academic activities.
