English Literature Student Successfully Internship at a Translation Company: Developing Language Expertise

MBKM Internship Program provides a great opportunity to English Literature students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga to be able to link the theories they have learned in real work practices, especially in the field of language. Some of the 2021 English Literature students successfully carried out internship programmes in several companies engaged in translation. From the internship experience obtained, they got many benefits to prepare their careers in facing the world of work later.

PT Anak Hebat Indonesia - Intania Novidanti, Jihan Nurhanifah, Nur Ardian Rahmawati, Farah Rizki Aulia, and Putri Annafi

Five English Literature students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta participated in the MBKM internship program at PT Anak Hebat Indonesia from 2 September to 2 November 2024. Intania Noviadanti, Jihan Nurhanifah, Nur Ardian Rahmawati, Farah Rizki Aulia, and Putri Annafi had the opportunity to become editors and translators at PT Anak Hebat Indonesia. They are in charge of editing manuscripts, translating texts, and compiling English-Indonesian pocket dictionaries. Some of the manuscripts they managed to edit and translate include editing the manuscript of Stoic Orang Jawa by Asti Musman, translating The Confession of Al-Ghazali into Indonesian, and editing and translating The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D.Wattles. Intania was also involved in the creation of SNBT 2025 guidebook, from arranging basic information to exam preparation strategies. Jihan had the opportunity to compile an English-Indonesian pocket dictionary. In addition to their primary duties, they participated in various additional training, such as language quiz, mail-editing, and attended a book fair.

Through this internship, they gained valuable practical experience, enhanced their knowledge of the translation and publishing industry, and improved their time management and teamwork skills.

PT Duta Kreasi Semesta Jogja Translator - Cheryl Milandina Solehah and Nur Afifah Audina D.

During the internship period at PT Duta Kreasi Semesta Jogja Translator from 2 October to the end of November 2024, two English Literature students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Nur Afifah Audina D. and Cheryl Milandina Solehah, had the opportunity to be involved in various activities. During the program, they did various tasks such as assisting in the translation of various documents, such as laws, medical and technical documents from Indonesian to English and vice versa. They also had the opportunity to be involved in the proofreading process of various documents. From this experience, they learned a lot about technical terms and ensuring that the translations were accurate and did not lead to ambiguity. They were also involved in managing the company's social media including creating engaging content, interacting with followers and analysing the performance of each post. Not only that, they were also active in several important events, such as assisting in the socialisation of the LPDP Scholarship Activity Event on 30 October 2024 by welcoming guests and providing consumption, and participating in the preparation of the employee farewell event on 31 October 2024. In addition to these tasks, they were also involved in administrative processes, including the recapitulation of incoming and outgoing order data, as well as employee attendance.

Through this experience, Nur Afifah and Cheryl not only enriched their understanding of the importance of thoroughness and accuracy in translation, but also developed their communication skills, and had the opportunity to broaden their connections by interacting with people from different backgrounds.
