The Implementation of Contextual Learning through an Internship Program at Brain Academy RuangGuru

M. Izzuddin Mafazatul Chusna, a student of the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, completed an internship program at Brain Academy RuangGuru Bantul from September 15 to December 15, 2025. This internship program was part of the implementation of contextual learning designed to provide students with professional experience in applying academic competencies to the professional world, particularly in the field of technology-based nonformal education.

During the internship program, Izzuddin was actively involved in various academic activities focusing on English learning, particularly in strengthening reading literacy skills (reading comprehension), grammatical understanding, and assisting students in preparing for literacy-based assessments such as TKA and SNBT. These activities positioned Izzuddin not only as an observer but also as an active participant in the dynamic and interactive learning process within the Brain Academy RuangGuru environment.

At the initial stage of the internship, he conducted observations of academic activities at several partner schools, including MAN 3 Sleman and SMAN 8 Yogyakarta. These observations aimed to understand students’ characteristics, classroom interaction patterns, and English teaching strategies implemented by instructors. In addition, he also studied the learning system, academic procedures, and evaluation mechanisms that serve as educational standards at Brain Academy RuangGuru. Through this observation process, he gained practical insight into how literacy-based learning approaches are implemented within the context of modern technology-integrated education.

Entering the implementation stage, Izzuddin became directly involved in classroom learning activities. His responsibilities included assisting students in understanding reading texts, conducting text analysis discussions, facilitating literacy-based exercises, and reinforcing grammar materials such as adjective clauses, gerunds, causative verbs, degrees of comparison, conditional sentences, and various text types included in junior and senior high school English curricula. The learning activities were conducted through interactive and communicative approaches, including classroom discussions, problem-solving activities, literacy-based exercises, digital quizzes, and collaborative activities that encouraged students’ active participation.

In addition to face-to-face activities, the intern was also required to adapt to the digital learning system utilized by RuangGuru. Various digital platforms and learning media were used as tools for material delivery, practice exercises, learning evaluation, and the management of students’ academic activities. This experience provided him with practical understanding regarding the integration of technology into English learning while broadening his perspective on educational transformation in the digital era.

Throughout the internship program, Izzuddin consistently carried out daily reflections documented in an activity logbook. These reflections served as a means of self-evaluation regarding the learning processes that had been conducted, including material delivery, classroom management, and interaction with students. Through this process, he experienced improvement in various professional aspects, such as classroom management skills, learning strategy development, effective time allocation, and the ability to provide academic feedback tailored to students’ needs.

On the other hand, the internship program also presented various challenges that became an important part of the professional learning process. Differences in students’ proficiency levels, variations in learning styles, and adaptation to digital-based learning systems became the primary challenges encountered during the internship. Nevertheless, these challenges were addressed through more flexible, communicative, and student-oriented learning approaches. Indirectly, these experiences trained the student’s ability to think critically, solve problems, and build effective communication within educational environments.

Academically and professionally, the internship program at Brain Academy RuangGuru significantly contributed to the development of English Literature students’ competencies. The student not only gained practical experience in applying linguistic and literacy theories learned in university courses but also developed interpersonal skills, teamwork abilities, time management, and adaptability to professional working environments. Furthermore, this experience expanded the student’s understanding of the dynamics of English learning within technology- and innovation-based nonformal educational institutions.

Overall, the internship program at Brain Academy RuangGuru Bantul can be regarded as an effective contextual learning medium in supporting the academic and professional competency development of students. Through active involvement in learning activities, the use of educational technology, and continuous reflection on teaching practices, this program provided valuable experience as preparation for entering the professional world, particularly in the fields of education, language studies, and literacy development in the digital era.
