English Department: Pandora Theater Held A Spectacular Hamlet Show

A drama performance titled “Hamlet” written by a famous playwright, William Shakespeare, has been performed by Pandora Theater of English Department chapter 2016. This performance involving the entire students of English Department chapter 2016 consisting of 30 actors, 30 artistic crews and production team, and 17 volunteers from English Department chapter 2017 was held on Friday (21/9/2018) at 18.30 Western Indonesian Times at Societet Militair, Taman Budaya of Yogyakarta.

The queue started at 19.00, lining from the Societet Militair building to the main gate of Taman Budaya of Yogyakarta. About 700 people crowded the area to watch the Hamlet Show performed by English Department chapter 2016.

The show started with the actors carrying a coffin from outside the building to the stage. The actors walked through the two aisles between the audience seats. This opening was featured with the jasmine scent, lighting, and music to support the gripping and gloomy atmosphere of a funeral. This was followed by the first scene showing a lively wedding party on the stage.

During the show which was about 2,5 hours long, there were some monologues by the two important characters in this drama play, Hamlet and Ophelia. Those two main characters were Mokhammad Khadid as Hamlet and Fina Choirul Fuida as Ophelia who successfully engaged the audiences to enjoy the whole performance. It could be seen from the scene in which Ophelia burst into tears when she lost her father, the audiences were also in tears as if they felt her sorrow.

This show was expected not only to enrich the interpretation of Hamlet itself but also to increase the innovation and the creativity of the students so that it would be the unique main product of English Department of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University.
